Latest NewsAGM Minutes (January 25, 2012)
SUMMARY OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF DUFFIELD LTC, JANUARY 25 2012
The minutes of the 2011 AGM were approved. The Secretary commented on the following from last year:-
- Key fobs – the new system, with six points of entry, was working well.
- Parking – the parking situation appeared to have generally improved. Some offending vehicles had been “stickered”. More stickers were available from the office for members to use if necessary.
- Defibrillator – this had been purchased and was available in emergency for any member to use safely.
Junior Awards
The Keith Hague shield for the most improved U12 player was presented to Isaac Harrison, son of Matt Harrison, himself a former winner as a club junior. A new trophy for the 12-18 group went to Jack Killip, who had won 3 titles in the club junior tournament this year.
Coaching - Head coach, James Grindell, highlighted:
- The growth in coaching and participation for juniors - about 40 juniors were now taking part in competitive play, with around 200 youngsters in coaching groups.
- Increasing adult participation including popular monthly social tournaments. James also plans to start “cardio tennis” to music this year, and hopefully increase social play and adult groups.
- Ashley Broomhead joined James and Simon in the coaching team last year, and the coaches were now supported by a team of older juniors, who had all gained coaching assistant qualifications at level 1 or 2.
Potential developments include:
- Plans to create a mini tennis court on the vacant land near the river behind courts 6/7, which would free up more general court space.
- The possibility of putting up lights on court 6 to the height of the perimeter fencing, which does not require planning consent.
- Purchase of branded hoodies and T shirts to promote the club this year for its 130th birthday. A new club logo is being developed.
There will be fund raising initiatives for these schemes.
Secretary’s Report - Keith Murcutt commented on the following :-
- Courts 3, 4 and 5 have been rejuvenated and they were now back in excellent condition. With regular brushing and sanding, there should not need to be any court renewal now for 4/5 years.
- Trees on the Ecclesbourne Avenue end of the first 5 courts have been cut back to allow greater light onto the surface. Similarly, bushes in the car park have been cut back drastically, which might now allow for two more parking spaces.
- A proposal for a three-court bubble for winter had been scrapped because of the huge cost but the club was interested in acquiring a second hand 3-skin bubble for court 7 if such became available.
- Our adult tennis teams had excelled in the 2011 Derbyshire Summer League. Men’s 2 had won Division 1, with Men’s 1 coming a close second on game difference. Mixed 1 had won their first Division, and Duffield had won the Lawson Wood Cup for the first time in many years.
Treasurer – Hudson Oakenful reported:
- An excellent increase in subscriptions and good profit for the year.
- Good increases in income from floodlights, coaching fees and the bar.
- Efforts to control the bills for heat and light e.g. through push button controls for saunas and thermostat controls, and shopping around for best prices.
- No major expenditure was anticipated for several years but the court renewal fund would be topped up.
Membership is now more than 500 but it was decided that it was not yet necessary to create a waiting list for membership. However, the position would be kept under review.
Court 7 Donations Plaque
Keith Murcutt showed two plaques which had been produced to mark the donations from members to assist with the resurfacing of court 7, for which the club was extremely grateful. One would be hung downstairs and the other placed on the outside noticeboard.
Duffield had been chosen as Club of the Year at last year’s County Awards evening, which was a great honour.
